The Marangu Route

The Marangu path, also known as the Coca-Cola way, is the only one that includes overnight huts, which are built in a dormitory-style arrangement and boasts an amazing walk up Mount Kilimanjaro. Climbers prefer the Marangu way since it is essentially the simplest path in the mountains and is the oldest and most well-known route.

The Marangu route begins with a drive to the Marangu gate and climbs Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast. As you receive your first glimpse of the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, the trail's course takes climbers through the forest before breaking into high moorland. You then proceed to the top from there. The Coca Cola route is ideal, with a high summit success rate due to its relative easiness.

The Shira Route

The Shira path starts close to the Shira Ridge and winds its way up towards the top of Africa's tallest peak, passing through imposing canyons and providing breathtaking views of west Kilimanjaro. The trek begins with a long walk from the Shira gate to Shira camp as it makes its way toward Mount Kilimanjaro from the west.

This is a reasonably level hike that traverses the entire Shira Plateau from west to east. The Shira path then passes beneath the Southern Circuit of Mount Kilimanjaro before ascending from Barafu. The Mweka path is used for the descent. The experience of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is unique and not for the faint of heart, but the satisfaction of doing so makes the hardship even more worthwhile.

The Rongai Route

The Rongai route has a more scenic outlook because it is the only way to ascend Mount Kilimanjaro from the north a more moderate grade than the other mountain roads. The journey begins with a brief drive from the Marangu gate to the Rongai gate as it approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the north. From there, a stroll through the rainforest, plantations, and jungle leads to Sima camp.

The Rongai trail winds over moorland and along a number of peaks before arriving at the Kikeleva caves and continuing on screes to Mawenzi Tarn Camp. After that, a short, inclined scree slope takes you to the Kibo cabin. To reach Uhuru peak, the highest point in Africa, continue around the rim after ascending the steep scree slope to Gillman's point. The Marangu is passed through as you descend.
