About Mikumi National Park

The park's convenient location on the road leading to the Selous Game Reserve, Africa's largest, has contributed to its rise in popularity. The number of visitors to the park has increased since the motorway connecting Dar es Salaam and the park. The Lumango Hills and the Uluguru Mountains form the park's backdrop. The Mikumi National Park in Tanzania is the country's fourth largest.

Visitors can check out various of the park's top attractions during the Safari to Mikumi national park. The mountain ranges that border Mikumi National Park include the park's attractions, located in the park's central region. Besides the nearby mountains, the park is bordered by some of Africa's most renowned wildlife reserves.

The park's popularity has increased because of the abundance of attractions available to its guests. The park is a popular destination for visitors on shorter safaris in Tanzania that depart from Dar es Salaam, such as the 3-day South Tanzania Safari. Due to its compact nature, it is an excellent option for weekend safaris that allow you to view as much as possible in a short amount of time.

Highlights & Attractions

1. Bird Watching

Mikumi National Park's main draws are over 400 different bird species, which may be found in both permanent and migratory settings. Due to its abundance of species, the park is now well-known among birders in Tanzania's southern region. Longer safaris in the Mikumi National Park are necessary to see the extensive list of birds. Although the park is not particularly large, a variety of bird species have been drawn there by the ecosystem's diversity and vegetation. The most frequently observed bird species include, among others, the Black-bellied Bustard, Secretary Bird, Guinea Fowl, Ox Pecker, Bateleur Eagle, Cattle Egret, Open-billed Stork, Yellow-Throated Long-Claw, Zanzibar Red Bishop, Lilac-breasted Roller, Martial Eagle, Francolin, Superb Starling, Straw-tailed Whydah, and Boehm's Bee-eater. Come on a birding safari during the rainy season if you want to see most of the migrating species found in Europe.

2. Culture

The residents are one of Mikumi National Park's unmissable attractions for tourists. The neighbourhood surrounding the park offers a fantastic opportunity to see African culture. The locals are organised under the Chilunga Cultural Tourism umbrella, and they have experienced tour guides who are well-versed in their history and culture. Their offices are in Morogoro, the closest town, which is only a short drive from the park's main entrance. You will be able to interact with the locals and participate in activities like cooking classes and ethnic dance performances. Since residents are actively involved in tourism management, cultural tourism is one strategy to promote sustainable tourism. The Maasai culture, Choma, Kinole, Madola, and other civilisations can be found in the park's communities and areas.

3. Wildlife

The park is home to a sizable collection of big game, including four of the five African bipeds—only rhinos are absent. Vast herds of elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, leopards, lions, sable antelopes, great kudus, and other animals can be found in Mikumi. Compared to Lake Manyara National Park, which is known as the home of the famous tree-climbing lions, Mikumi National Park offers a better possibility of spotting these animals.

The Mkata plains, blocked off from the northwest by the major highway that runs through the park, are located in the Central area of the park, where there is a greater concentration of wildlife game. All the game viewing activities are done in the North West, while the Southwest is good for birding. The creatures can be seen all year round. However, they are mainly found in water catchment areas during the dry season. In the South East of the park, close to the Vuma highlands, are the sparsely populated Miombo woodlands, where the shy Kudus and Sable Antelopes can easily be spotted.
