About Lake Manyara

One of Tanzania's smallest safari parks is Lake Manyara National Park. The park contains a variety of microclimates, diversified terrain, and animal populations that, in miniature, represent many different regions of Tanzania. As a convenient stopover between the rival African wilderness destinations of Ngorongoro and Tarangire, it is easily accessible in just 90 minutes by road from Arusha.

Lake Manyara has a narrow band of acacia woodland and an area of grassland that alternates seasonally between short, rich grazing lawns and golden, dry grass savannah

Highlights & Attractions

1. Wildlife at Lake Manyara

Among the animals seen at Lake Manyara are several elephants, wildebeests, giraffes, and buffaloes. The park is well-known for its abundant equestrian-themed mammals, including zebras, impalas, warthogs, and waterbucks. The tiny and prominent shy Kirk's dik-dik and klipspringer can be challenging to spot on the escarpment's slopes.

Animals constantly move around the small road circuit used for game drives, so the entire trip usually takes no more than three to four hours.

2. Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara is the centrepiece of Lake Manyara National Park and a popular destination for visitors on Tanzania bird viewing safaris. At 470 square kilometres in size, the lake accounts for roughly two-thirds of the park. It ranks as Tanzania's seventh largest lake. The Great Rift Valley created Lake Manyara, a shallow alkaline lake in Lake Manyara National Park that is 960 metres above sea level and has a depth of 10 feet.

Lake Manyara is a magnificent place to see various birds and animals. Lake Manyara gets its name from a Maasai word, "Manyara," which means a spiky and protective enclosure around a family residence, also known as a "Boma" in the area. Aside from the large numbers of bright pink flamingos, visitors to the lake's shoreline may also spot great white pelicans, pink-backed pelicans, yellow-billed storks, and grey herons.

Animals like hippos, elephants, and others congregate around the lake's edge to hydrate and cool down in its waters.

3. Maji Moto Spring

Maji Moto Springs, also known as "hot water" in Kiswahili, are a stunning natural feature in Lake Manyara National Park. The springs are a secluded sanctuary of crystal clear waters surrounded by palm and fig trees. Lake Manyara national park is a great place to explore on a Tanzania safari. The hot springs are perfect for a refreshing swim and a picnic lunch. Maji Moto springs have water that is about 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

4. Birdlife

Lake Manyara National Park is home to more than 400 bird species, making it a prime location for birders on a Tanzania birding safari. This high bird concentration makes Lake Manyara National Park one of the best birding sites in Tanzania. The park is home to various bird species because of its varied habitats, including groundwater forest, Lake Manyara floodplains, acacia woodland, and savannah plains.

Pink flamingos, cormorants, pelicans, African hawk eagles, African jacanas, African spoonbills, Baglafecht weavers, Comb ducks, Crowned eagles, Great white pelicans, Greater flamingos, Grey-crowned cranes, Hamerkops, Hottentot teals, Lesser flamingos, Little stints, Pied avocets.

5. Ground Water Forest

The groundwater forest in Lake Manyara national park is another must-see attraction for tourists on a safari in Tanzania. The groundwater forest is home to some of Africa's rarest and most fascinating animals, including the continent's most significant troop of baboons. There are a variety of different primates that call this groundwater forest home, including blue monkeys and vervet monkeys.

The ground water forest in Lake Manyara national park is a unique natural and visual attraction due to the dense dominance of evergreen Mahogany trees and wild date palms.

Gnarled vines and mossy coatings on the mahogany trees add to the eerie attraction of the groundwater forest. At the same time, a lush carpet of wild hibiscus, ginger, and other leaf plants flourishes on the forest floor.

6. Acacia Woodlands

Lake Manyara National Park is home to a wide variety of animals, including the fabled tree-climbing lions, a significant concentration of elephants, leopards, giraffes, and many more. One of the most incredible places to see these creatures is the park's acacia forests.

The acacia woodlands extend their green shade over the star grass in the area between the lake shore and the wall of the Great Rift Valley. The acacia trees have flat-topped or umbrella-like tops. The acacia trees are towering tamarind and sausage trees that provide shelter for a wide variety of animals, including giraffes and other species who spend their days in the trees.
